13/05/2010: ART ATHINA 2010

ART-ATHINA 2010

13-16 May

Faliro Pavilion

(TaeKwonDo)

Following the widely acclaimed success of the 15th edition of ART-ATHINA last May (which showcased the work of more than 300 artists represented by 58 galleries from 12 countries and attracted 12,000 visitors), the International Contemporary Art Fair of Athens is back with its 16th edition, which will take place on 13 - 16 May 2010.

ART-ATHINA 2010 will once more be hosted in the Faliro Pavilion (TaeKwonDo), which last year was transformed into a sparkling islet of art for four days leaving all visitors and participators with the best impressions.

The internationally acclaimed fair was established in 1993 by the Hellenic Art Galleries Association with a view to showcase selected art galleries from Greece and all over the world, as well as to organise a parallel programme with important art events. This year, the general director Alexandros J. Stanas, the Hellenic Art Galleries Association’s board of directors and D.art, the organising company, are scheduling a series of novelty events, as well as a parallel programme that will embrace the whole city.

In May, the visitors of ART-ATHINA 2010 will have the opportunity to see many artists’ books by contemporary Greek artists, in a parallel exhibition that will be hosted by the fair. These books form a very special part of conceptual artistic creation and the exhibition Greek artists’ books: Contemporary artworks & editions curated by Maria A. Angeli intends to shed light on this –not very

widely known– aspect of Greek artists’ creation. It also intends to contribute in a more integrated exhibition of their work and place the Greek artists’ book within the art market.

Among the institutions hosted by ART-ATHINA 2010, the Spyropoulos Foundation will showcase the eight artists that have been honoured with the Spyropoulos Award since 2006 – which is awarded every year to young artists up to the age of 30. The visitors will also have the opportunity to see photographs of the work of all the artists that have received the award until today. This museum is now celebrating the 20th anniversary since its foundation and the visitors will be informed about the wide range of its activities. The newly founded Contemporary Greek Art Institute will also be hosted by the fair. This institute is partly a continuation of Nees Morfes gallery, which after 50 years of contribution to contemporary art creation was transformed into an institute with a view to record contemporary Greek art since 1950.
